Corrigan Correctional Center Overview

Corrigan Correctional Center is run by the Connecticut Department of Correction. That is the state agency that took over the old county jails in 1968. So Corrigan is not a county jail, even though it does the local jail job for men. The center sits at 986 Norwich-New London Turnpike in Uncasville. It holds male pretrial accused men, sentenced men, and a small number of federal-status men. The Department of Correction rates it Level 3/4. A security level is a score that sets how closely a person must be watched, and higher numbers mean tighter control.

What makes Corrigan local is the courts it serves. The official Department of Correction page says the center confines both pretrial and sentenced offenders for the Superior Courts in Danielson, New London, Norwich, and Windham. A man whose case runs through one of those courts may be housed here. That does not mean every person arrested in the county comes to Corrigan. The center holds the male stream tied to those four court towns, while women from the same area go to York Correctional Institution instead.

The center carries two names. Many older records call it Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, and the current state web address still uses that combined form. The official page now leads with the heading Corrigan Correctional Center, which is the name in active use. Who Is Held at Corrigan

Corrigan holds men in three legal groups. The largest two are the accused and the sentenced. Accused means a person has been charged but not yet found guilty, and they are held while the case moves through court. Sentenced means a person was convicted and given a term to serve. Both live at Corrigan because Connecticut runs one unified system rather than split county jails and state prisons. The Department of Correction is clear that current custody does not always mean a conviction, since accused men still wait for trial.

The numbers show the mix. The June 1, 2026 monthly statistics counted 669 men confined at Corrigan and no women. Of those, 387 were sentenced, 272 were accused, and 10 were held on federal status. Federal status means the man is held for a federal matter rather than a state charge. The race breakdown from that same report listed 266 Black, 210 White, 186 Hispanic, 4 Asian, and 3 American Indian. The 2024 PREA audit recorded an age range of 19 to 75, and the center held no youthful inmates at that time.

Because the center serves four court towns, a New London County arrest is just one path inside. A man whose case is heard in Norwich or Windham can be housed here just as easily as one charged in New London. The men and women of the local court stream split between two prisons. Corrigan takes the men, and York takes the women, and together they form the county custody map.

Corrigan Capacity and Population

Corrigan is a large center, and its count shifts week to week. The 2024 PREA audit set the designed capacity at 841 beds and recorded 658 men on the day of the audit, with a 12-month average daily population of 631. That audit found the center was not over capacity in the prior 12 months. A more recent state open-data count from June 2, 2026 put the total at 675, split into 290 accused or other and 385 sentenced. The May 2026 average population was 661.

How to Look Up an Inmate at Corrigan

There is no Corrigan-only public roster. Because Corrigan is a state facility, the right tool is the statewide Connecticut Department of Correction inmate search. It covers every man in DOC custody at Corrigan, both accused and sentenced, and it is updated daily. The state service says you can search by name, by date of birth, or by Connecticut DOC number, which is the unique ID the agency assigns each person. The search leaves out records sealed under the Youthful Offender Statute, and it does not show people held only for federal immigration authorities.

1. Open the CT DOC inmate search, or start from the DOC inmate information page to read the daily-update and exclusion notes first.
2. Search by the man's DOC number if you have it, since that is the narrowest identifier. If not, search by name and date of birth.
3. Check the result to confirm he is housed at Corrigan Correctional Center and not another DOC facility.
4. Open the profile to view custody status, sentence or accused standing, and facility location.

A man just arrested in a New London County town may not show up right away. The system updates once a day, and police or court steps may still be in progress. Corrigan Address and Contact

The fastest way to reach Corrigan is by phone, and the postal address uses the Uncasville form. For questions the center cannot answer, the DOC Public Information Office handles offender information during weekday hours. Call the center before any visit, since a state correctional facility does not run a walk-in records lobby the way a county sheriff might.

The current DOC page lists Warden Brian Perez and Deputy Warden Justin Oles as the center's leadership. The 2024 PREA audit named Daniel Dougherty as warden at the time of that audit, so the two records reflect different dates rather than a conflict. Visiting Someone at Corrigan

A visit at Corrigan starts with the approved visiting list. A visitor must be on the man's active list before any visit, and the center can cancel visits for safety or security reasons. In-person social visits need no prescheduling, and each one runs about one hour. For general population, the day of a visit is set by the last digit of the inmate number, with odd and even numbers split. Video visits work differently. They must be scheduled 72 hours ahead through the DOC Visit Request Form, run 45 minutes, and are capped at two social video visits per week.

The general DOC rules still apply. Bring a valid photo ID, arrive at least 15 minutes early, and leave phones and electronic devices outside, since they are not allowed inside. No more than two visitors, children included, may join an in-person visit, and attire must be reasonably modest. Visits do not happen on state-observed holidays. Mail to a man at Corrigan must carry his full name and inmate number, followed by the center name and street address. Staff open and inspect mail for contraband, though legal mail is opened in the inmate's presence and not read. Phone service runs through Securus, the DOC vendor, and men cannot receive incoming calls. Money can go in by U.S. mail, JPay, TouchPay, or Western Union, with the Inmate Trust Fund handling mailed deposits. The commissary lets men order weekly, with a spending limit set in the handbook.

When you mail money, include the man's first name, middle initial, last name, inmate number, and date of birth, plus your own full name and address. Padded envelopes are discouraged, since they raise security concerns and can slow delivery. These are the same statewide DOC rules that apply across all of its facilities.

Intake, Classification, and Housing

When a man enters Corrigan, the center records his identity, legal status, and any holds, then assigns a security level. That sorting step is called classification, and the Department of Correction governs it under Administrative Directive Chapter 9. Classification weighs the charge, sentence, behavior, and program needs to decide where a person is housed and how closely he is watched. An accused man and a sentenced man can share the same center while sitting in different units.

The 2024 PREA audit recorded 12 housing units at Corrigan, which gives staff room to separate groups by level and need. The custody-level counts from that audit ran heavily toward Level 4, the tightest tier the center carries, with smaller counts at Levels 1, 2, and 3. The center also keeps a close monitoring unit for members of security risk groups. A security risk group is a gang or similar organization that the Department of Correction tracks for safety reasons.

Attorneys and other professionals work around the center's count schedule, the head counts that pause movement. Corrigan Programs and History

Corrigan offers programs aimed at release and recovery. The Department of Correction credits the center with an extensive anger-management curriculum. It also runs full education services and addiction services, plus the close monitoring unit for security risk groups noted above. The center's history blends two prisons. Corrigan opened on December 30, 1994, and the nearby Radgowski facility had opened earlier, on January 10, 1991. The state joined the two in May 2001 as Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center. The Department of Correction notes the Radgowski facility closed on October 6, 2021 due to a reduced incarcerated population, while Corrigan remains active. That is why both names still appear in official records even though only Corrigan operates today.

Outside review comes through the PREA audit, which checks a facility against the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act standards. Corrigan's 2024 PREA audit found 3 standards exceeded, 42 met, and 0 not met. The audit also counted 388 staff with inmate contact, 59 volunteers, and no contractors. Directions and Visitor Arrival

Corrigan sits off Route 32 in Uncasville, and the approach trips up many first-time visitors. From I-395, take exit 79, not 79A, for Route 163 toward Uncasville. Turn left at the exit and follow Route 163 to Route 32. Then turn left onto Route 32 north and go about one and a quarter miles. The center is on the left at a sharp curve. Drivers from Hartford, Bridgeport, and Brooklyn all funnel onto I-395 and use the same exit 79.
